Why your naira card keeps getting declined online

You enter your card details on a site, everything looks right, and the payment fails. Then it happens again on a different site. If this sounds familiar, the problem usually isn't you or the merchant. It's the currency.

Every foreign charge is a currency trade

When you pay a US or European company with a naira card, your bank has to find the dollars or euros to settle that payment. Because foreign currency has been scarce, many Nigerian banks have at different times cut the monthly amount you can spend abroad on a naira card, applied tight per-transaction limits, or paused international card spending altogether.

The result is a card that works perfectly at home and fails almost everywhere online.

Other common reasons for a decline

• International transactions are switched off on your card in your banking app.
• Your monthly foreign limit is used up, even if your naira balance is high.
• The merchant flags the card's country and blocks it as a fraud precaution.
• Billing details don't match what the bank has on file.

The fix: pay in dollars from the start
