Gift card or dollar card: the best way to pay for games
Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, in-game currency. When a gift card makes more sense and when a virtual card does.
- Gift cards are best for topping up a store wallet or giving games as gifts.
- A dollar virtual card is best for subscriptions like online multiplayer passes.
- Always match the store region to your gaming account.
Gaming is one of the biggest reasons people in Nigeria need to pay in dollars. Game stores, online passes and in-game currency are almost all priced in USD. There are two good ways to pay, and each one has its place.
When a gift card is the better choice
- Topping up a store wallet. Steam, PlayStation Store and Xbox all let you load a gift card into your account balance and spend from it.
- Budgeting. A $20 card means you spend $20, nothing more.
- Gifting. Send a code to a friend and they choose the game.
When a dollar virtual card is the better choice
- Subscriptions. Online multiplayer and game library subscriptions renew automatically, so they need a card on file.
- Exact amounts. Pay the exact price of a game or bundle instead of rounding to a card value.
- Stores that don't take gift cards. Some publishers' own stores only accept cards.
The region rule
Gaming accounts are tied to a country, and so are most store gift cards. A card for one region usually can't be redeemed on an account set to another. Check your account's region in the store settings before you buy, and buy the matching card.
Keep your account safe
Turn on two-factor sign-in on your gaming accounts. Never share a gift card code with someone who messaged you first, and ignore offers of free in-game currency that ask you to log in on an outside website.
